taevachi: Shenhe from Genshin Impact drinking tea (teatime)
Friday was very beautiful. Snow has covered the land but the sun was shining, so it was very bright during the day: the best kind of winter day. When it's late and gets dark, it always feels depressing. This weekend offered some nice, bright mornings to enjoy tea.

On Saturday, I went to a book fair. I got some books, mostly about history, as well as a collection of poems by Isa Asp. She was a woman who lived in the late 1800s but died of tuberculosis at the age of 19. Some people think some of her poems have sapphic elements to them, so she has been dubbed the "Sappho of Finland".

On Sunday, I went weaving and oh boy did it kick off. Once you start, it becomes very fast to advance with. I did way more than what is shown in the photo below but that was me at some point yesterday. The pattern is traditional to this region, but the colours are fully based on Portal, lol. I also showed some new Hazbin episodes to my friend. Unfortunately we didn't get to episode 4 yet, which is of course the crazy bomb episode.

taevachi: Judar and Hakuryuu from Magi (juhaku)
Wow I also wanna do this!

1. Under what rating do you write most?
General audiences!

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
1. Magi!
2. Genshin
3. Fate/strange fake

3. Which character do you write about most?
Hakuryuu Ren from Magi!

4. What are the 3 top pairings you've written?
Easy because I've only really written two ships! First is Juhaku (Judar x Hakuryuu) from Magi! My beloveds! Almost all my fics! But I also wrote a little Sethoscara (Sethos x Scaramouche from Genshin). It seems I've also used Alimor (Alibaba x Morgiana) from Magi as a side ship a few times, but other than that indeed, I haven't written any other ships.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
1. Post-Canon. Lmao I'm sorry but... the way the Magi manga ended was very, well, open-ended, so I've just had to fill that void with my own theories and fics.
2. Juhaku Week. Looks like I participated in such an event!
3. Shared Fluff or Ficlet. Short fluff fics are what I've done most I think. I just don't have the brain power or patience for something really long, so this is understandable!

Kind of funny to think of it that my ao3 is just... Juhaku. And since I've been focusing on other fandoms, it's also resulted in me not writing almost anything.

taevachi: Sethos from Genshin Impact smiling at the camera (sethos darling)
I think I need to cut down on coffee: two cups of it within 6 hours and I become anxious and dizzy for the rest of the day. Need to try to focus more on tea again... My main teapot broke at one point. I bought a new one now and everything, but it's been a bit of work to get back into that habit.

Genshin Sumeru event spoilers!

I enjoyed that so muchhhhh just like any time there is a Sumeru event. Sumeru characters are my favourites, Sumeru is my favourite. And as a Sethos fan it was AWESOME to hear Zeno for the first time in a long while! And have Sethos in an event... People need to stop underestimating him! I streamed myself playing the event to my friend and he was like, you've been the number one fan of this no-name 4* character for so long you deserve props for it. He is a fool, of course; I am nowhere near the biggest Sethos fans. But I do like him a lot. And of course I loved having my favourite guy Hat Guy being namedropped. (Would've been better if he was in the event but I get it, he's in Nod Krai.)

Imma be real, I was not spoiled to that event, so... When I saw Zandik's name on that letter in the domain I almost fell down from my chair! I kept yelling at the screen: "Lumine! Paimon! It's Dottore! Paimon haven't you read the Genshin comic, it's Dottore!" But it seems like they truly didn't know. What is it gonna lead to, are we going to have Dottore's return to Sumeru to burn down the Irminsul like in the old Sumeru trailer? If they actually do that I'll be so on that Genshin train again. I haven't even finished Natlan story because I don't care much about it... Sumeru is where Genshin peaked for me. xD

Speaking of Nod Krai, it's apparently based on Finland, the Baltics, and tiny bits of Russia/Snezhnaya in. It mentions Kuutar, which is actually the name of the Finnish moon goddess. Not that it has any connections to actual Finnish mythology beyond random names. Like Eye of Kratti, Kratti or Aarni is a spirit that protects treasure. And the island names, Hiisi, Lempo and Paha.... What, the Fatui are on an island literally called Paha ("Evil")? xD "Hiisi" means a scared place, but the word was demonized after the arrival of Christianity. Lempo is a big question... It refers to a fireball/comet thing in the sky. People can't seem to agree if it means a demon, a fire spirit/goddess, or a love goddess of some kind even. But she was obviously demonized at some point. Why are these islands so darn demonic ^^'''

NPC names have also been hilarious. For example, we have ladies named "Some Flowers" (Kukkia) and "Without Honey" (Hunajatta). And no, these are not real Finnish names. It's a weird choice considering that "Flower" (Kukka) would've been a real name.

Before the invention of metals, people thought that the dome of the sky was made of stone. However, as forging became a thing, the sky god Ilmar(inen) begame a forger who had forged the dome of the sky. He was not really prayed to even though he was the creator; other gods on earth and down in the underworld were more important for that. Understandable, I guess. When you're a hunter-gatherer, the sky is just there. The goddesses of animal species are way more important. This would all change if you invented agriculture, however, which is very dependant on weather and climate.

By interacting with your neighbours, you get ideas of a new kind of sky deity. One who keeps up the whole world, like a world pillar ("Vironvipu") or its guardian at the same time. With rain and thunder, he gives your fields fertility. (Although thunder used to be the duty of kokko, a fire spewing bird). Your neighbours call him Frauja or Freyr, "Lord", and veraldar god, "god of the world". You start calling him Virankannos ("the one who holds up the world") or simply just Ukko ("Lord"). Maybe the name Rauni for him was also loaned from neighbours. He became connected to Jumala ("god, celestial") like Ilmar(inen) had once been. He was present in fertility rites of the youth which involved dancing, partying, and sleeping (chastely!) together. His phallus, Jumi's mallet, stood at the center of the fields, bringing further fertility.

Suddenly, a different group of people start reaching out to you from your neighbours' lands. They speak of this Lord, celestial god, as the only god. They say, see, you already had this creator, this Lord (Ukko) in your ancestors' beliefs. We come to bring joyful news about him and his son. And it's easy for them to convert you into their new view of UkkoHerra, a new word for "Lord" they also brought with them. You still keep remembering Ilmar(inen) as a smith, even a controller of winds since he has those smith's bellows. Ukko, Jumala, Jumi, Virankannos, Rauni... he gets new roles originally belonging to this other Herra, nobody mentioning that he's actually some other guy named Yahweh. Yahweh and Ukko are almost fused into one.

And this Herra, he had a son, Jesus, our saviour! He rose from the dead. And you start thinking about Ukko's son, similarly fertility connected Lemminkäinen. In addition to fertility, he is also connected to fire and the sun: fire itself was Ukko's son but the creation of Päivätär (sun goddess). The stories get muddied up, further influenced by your northern neighbours, the Sámi. The Sámi are powerful shamans like nobody else around these parts, which you have huge admiration for. They do tell a warning tale, however: if the shaman's helper is not able to awaken the shaman from his trance, he will get stuck on the other side, his soul elsewhere while his body rottens. In your admiration, and your own practices which developed from earlier shamanism, you start seeing Lemminkäinen as a shamanistic hero. After all, your western neighbours have a story of how their Freyr got a bride from another world, the icy Jötunheimr. And the icy world, Pohjola, is obviously the underworld. And who is able to travel to the underworld? Why, a shaman of course.

So Lemminkäinen also goes to the icy land of Pohjola to look for a bride, and he is able to cross that border with his shamanistic abilities. But he is the son of the Lord (Ukko)... it just so happens that while he is trying to hunt a swan (sin!!!), the Lady of the underworld, the goddess of death herself, struck Lemminkäinen dead and dismembered his body into the river of the underworld. Luckily for Lemminkäinen, he also had a mother, and mother's love knows no bounds. Though it's not common to speak of a female shaman, Lemminkäinen's mother is a master shaman, transforming into a bird to look for her dead son. She finds his dismembered body, puts him back together and resurrects him with Sacred Mead. The Son of God has risen. (Mead is made with honey, similarly sacred, bees being connected to the forest and sun goddesses. Wasps, however, are explicitly connected to the same family of fire as Lemminkäinen.)

The stories of the shamans stuck on the other side stays with you. In some retellings, you say that Lemminkäinen's mother is not able to awaken her son whose body has already rotten and been claimed by death. It kind of defeats the purpose though, doesn't it? You have forgotten whose son Lemminkäinen was. Something about the world, Viro, Vipu... Whatever those words mean! You only know of the Lord. So you change up the tale: Lemminkäinen's father was a shaman named Vipunen! And HE is the one who got stuck in a trance and died. His first name was probably Antero or something, like the Sámi shaman Ikämieli/Akmeeli/Antereeus who got stuck as well.

(We still don't know what the "original" first name was before it was misinterpreted as Antero (Christian name). Possibly Angervo ("meadowsweet, dropwort") or Kanderva (kanta "base" like a pillar would have yk)).

· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·

This is my theory for the confusing oral myths about Lemminkäinen, Virankannos, Ukko, Vipunen and Jumi. And according to my theory, the last four of those names would be the one and the same being... well, until Vipunen branched off to become its own thing.

The oldest mentions of Finnish Native Faith are from 1551 by the Christian bishop Mikael Agricola. He wrote the first books in Finnish, but his language quickly became quite difficult to understand as ortography developed. He said:

Quin Rauni Ukon Naini härsky /
ialosti Wkoi Pohiasti pärsky

Whatever that means! The century after Agricola, these lines were interpreted as: Ukko was a thunder god and he had a thunder goddess wife Rauni, and it was thundering when they fought. And this stuck SO DEEP. So deep that majority of Finns probably still think this was the case! (Disastrous.) It prompted Jacob Fellman to invent a rowan goddess Ravdna as the supposed wife of the Sámi thunder god. It caused researchers of Norse mythology to assume that Thor's wife Sif is supposed to represent a rowan! It's a centuries long shit train of misinformation.

And by the way: Agricola also mentioned Virankannos as the "protector of oats". Therefore, it IS possible that Virankannos (and therefore Vipunen etc) is not the same as Ukko. However, oral tradition from many places such as Ladoga Karelia SPECIFICALLY calls Virankannos the High God Ukko. So just throwing that out there.

I strongly disagree with the common interpretation of Agricola's lines (and of course I'm not the only one or the first one to do so. I read scholars I swear.) I think it should be understood that Rauni refers to Ukko himself, and when his (unnamed) wife becomes horny, it causes them to copulate (Ukko "splashing from the bottom"... weird but I think it refers to the increasing fertility of the fields and land. Or increased fertility from the direction of the underworld or something, not important.) So Ukko is not a thunder god or whatever. He is, first and foremost, a FERTILITY god who is able to increase fertility with rain and sunshine: by controlling the weather. With weather, he also started to be seen as the one in control of thunder. But that is SECONDARY to his role.

I can't even go on Wikipedia and write "Ukko is a fertility god" or whatever because I HAVE NO SOURCE. The thunder god stuff is so deeply ingraned in literature about this topic even Martti Haavio, who guessed a lot of bs but was on the correct path with this one!, did not dare to state that Ukko himself was a fertility god, simply stating that these lines were referring to a fertility god separate from thunder god Ukko.

How I wish to find a scholar's text agreeing with my view here, or for some scholar in the future to write it. So it would gain legitimacy as an opinion. For now, it is a view that exists only in my sect of Finnish Native Faith, the only member being myself.

From here.

1. What’s harder to live without, chocolate or alcohol?
- Chocolate, I have no need or addiction for alcohol whatsoever even though I can drink it. Chocolate is a nice flavour in some forms which alcohol could never match.

2. Does the colour yellow remind you of anything?
- Narcissus flowers.

3. Who most annoyed you last week?

- Haha uhm. Someone from work who almost ditched me, friend who complains too much, gf who drinks too much.

4. Do you have a cutesy romantic nickname for your partner (or previous partners)?
- Not reallyyy but I might make variations of the one she uses for me (I'm not doxxing myself. Or her.)

5. What is your favourite Stephen King movie?
- The first IT remake movie I guess, I haven't really seen many.

Happy Fathers' Day! (Yesterday when I started writing this.)

I did a crime, a fraud! I found an old, abandoned iPad at the workplace. Usually if stuff is bought but abandoned by the unit that owns it: it's free real estate. Unfortunately, the tablet was locked and nobody at the unit remembered the credentials anymore. You know how it is with Apple products. I was not able to find the receipt for that iPad in our system, but I found the receipt of another one bought around the same time, so... I changed the serial number on that receipt with inspect element and sent it to Apple like please remove the Activation Lock. It was a Friday, and I felt really bad about it because it's kinda fraud even though it was legitimately our iPad. Welp, Apple approved it anyways and now I have a iPad! I've never owned an Apple product before. Then my friend was just like, oh that's so old, you could get my own iPad, it's way newer. Lol.

My cats are sooooo cute. Even though one of them keeps having poopy butt problem. My gf owns a trimmer though so I was thinking of using it to shave her butt, it's very hairy. Also she's done dumb things like, accidentally stepped on poop in the litter box and then spread that stuff all over the floors and my sheets I had just changed an hour ago! Thanks a lot. I still love you, baby. I hope she also loves me even though I do evil things like forcibly clean her poopy paws.

I made an accident and joined a band. I mean I do singing at this music academy, and they have practise bands that were missing vocalists so I volunteered for one. My big dream is still, someday, to be able make folk music. I kinda wished I could use GarageBand on the iPad but I'd have to figure out how to get some older version on it because the one on AppStore doesn't work.

Unfortunately my new gf has many issues. She overdoes it with the alcohol. She's been advancing well in her therapy and is able to do a lot of things she didn't use to be able to, but there's still such a way to go. She is also too scared to use glasses, but she doesn't see well. I wish she would learn to use them quick so we could actually like, watch movies or something together without having to sit right in front of the TV. I really wish she's gather the courage to meet my parents too since I'm very close to them.

At weaving, I was finally able to actually start the weaving process itself, lol. There is A LOT you need to do and get ready before you can even start with the weaving itself. My friend is forcing me to play Dark Souls too. I feel like I don't have much time to do, well, much anything, and that's unfortunate. Also big money stuggles since I still owe for that new shower ^^''

I wanna make more decorations for my walls in the form of printing out art that's been made about mythology and folklore. At my hairdressers' there are great decorations, including the Birth of Venus, but I guess I don't want something that "basic".

Also, the new season of Hazbin has been quite c r a z y.

August

This heat has been a struggle to survive through. Weeks and weeks of heatwave when we really do not have ACs where I live. They didn't use to be necessary. Cats have been struggling too and haven't been eating as much as usual.

But I think I milked the summer out of everything it was good for... I mean, I enjoyed it! I summered this summer! I went to swim in the lake many times and stuff. And with many friends.

I have a new date! Not very nerdy, doesn't play games and hasn't watched anime, but she asked me to show some. Now I just need to figure out which would be good shows to start with. I already tried showing some Hazbin.
taevachi: A sunflower against a clear sky (summer)
Look I don't have functioning brain. I don't know what happens. I just try to make it through the week and then I forget EVERYTHING. There was like Midsummer and stuff, it was nice. And we had local Pride which rocked. Oh, I also went to an anime convention (and cosplayed a mythology figure because of course I did). Next week should be warm to, it's time to summer. I already had my ~week long summer holiday last month though.

But like the only thing in my mind, the only thing I feel like I can care about, is pre-Christian mythic poetry. So there. Mom said I should get tested for autism.

I feel a sense of loneliness frequently, but I've also been socializing a lot, so it's probably not worrying. I'm starting my singing classes again next month after a year's (involuntary) break, and I also picked up weaving. My friend also kind of got me excited about making zines by just... drawing on normal paper. Maybe I'll share some at some point. I don't really care about how "skilled" it is when it's about figures and concepts that don't have any supposed appearance anyways.

I have dreams of starting my own little coven of... mythic poem enthusiasts. xD Unfortunately, I don't live in a very populous place.

· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·

I watched two new films. First was Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (2023, Savvusanna sõsarad). I saw it accidentally when I was staying the night at my friend's, supposed to sleep on the couch which had TV in front of it. And this film was on TV. Absolutely heartbreaking experiences were recounted in this film, but that's the point of it. Just listen.

I also saw SATAN’S GUIDE TO THE BIBLE (2023) which I thought was just a Youtube video but apparently, it's also a film. In it, Satan is teaching some fundie family children about historical inaccuracies in the Bible. They made Satan hot in this, which is "based", of course. Anyways, I like history but never before really cared about the historical accuracy of the Old Testament. Well, now that I know more about it, and having seen stuff-that's-in-the-Bible-but-never-actually-happened used as justification for what's happening in Gaza, AND also being kind of pissed of at the removing of Athirat from the pantheon, AND AND having to had to hear dumb shit from conservative Christians because of Pride, I finally got off my ass and ended my membership to the state church which I had been a member of since birth. The first time I tried, the website didn't work. They really tried to make this as difficult as possible. I haven't talked about this to anyone because I know some find it offensive if I say what I think but, I hope at least on my own blog I can say it.

taevachi: Eye opening, wearing green mascara (green)
I have moved into the new apartment I own, yay! Now I have properly room for cat trees, and a new bigger cat tree was the first thing I bought and carried into the empty apartment. I had the big moving day 2,5 weeks ago so I've had some time to get used to everything. I emptied the last boxes yesterday, I had a little bit of a crisis with the new wardrobe but let me tell you. I bought TWO cheap plastic boxes and it fixed EVERYTHING. It allowed me to organize everything better and save room = boom all good now.

My big gripe is the shower cubicle! God it is so ass. The floor keeps flooding and the doors keep falling off the rails. As soon as I can afford it, I'm getting rid of this and buying a new one.

Speaking of affording, I'm still missing some essential furniture, namely balcony seats and little table, a shelf for the living room, and shelves for the laundry. I'm supposed to go to another town/city the 1st of June and they have IKEA so I know where I'll be visiting. My wallet is not gonna like it though.

And the reason I'm going to that city is because I'm helping out a certain lesbian. We're gonna be in the same town for the summer. I wonder if we'll be dating some day?

Oh, I am also happy I got to set up my weirdo shelf xD It has two pieces of art on it, of Kave and Päivätär, as well as a forest reindeer horn and a magic wand made of forest reindeer horn ^^''' I have a weird liking of forest reindeer.

So uhhh Eurovision happened. I felt sooooo meh about the whole thing because last year's competition was mega ass. And I kept getting Youtube ads of the Israeli artist saying in Finnish, vote for me. It's so annoying and I'm not even sure if that's allowed, nobody else makes such ads for their songs. I was, however, enamoured with Erika Vikman's stage performance in ICH KOMME, holy moly I got the feeling like yeah I am a lesbian alright... Spain's ESA DIVA was also great and gave me same feelings! My favourite for the victor would've been Estonia. It felt so wholesome, he just sang about coffee. I want more coffee songs for humanity. (Also Joostice.) While I would never wish a victory for a ballad in ESC, I'm not so mad at Austria's win because the artist has real talent and an amazing singing voice. I'm also happy for young queer performants successes this and last year.

They have made some fixes (like not making me look at Martin Österdahl's face), which is an improvement sure, but the competition is not fully saved by any means.

That's all worth mentioning I can think of right now.

Answers for The Friday Five for 14 March 2025.

1. How far back can you trace your family tree?

From memory, like only to my grandparents or great-grandparents ^^''' But as far as genealogy is concerned, I think my ancestors have been traced back to somewhere around the 1500s at least.

2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives?
I have a shitton of relatives, many of them have strange things but they're not that interesting. But I keep thinking back to my great-great-something-grandpa. He was born early only after 6 months. He was so tiny, they kept him in a tobacco box that was filled with sheep wool, and fed him milk by dripping it from the wool. He made it, of course since I am here, it's kind of amazing, on the countryside, without modern medicine.

3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives?
From the perspective of tradition, naming children after ancestors is beautiful. It comes from the idea that ancestors' names, and through them, the ancestors themselves, kept living on in the family. I wouldn't name anyone with a number though, like in the example "the Fourth". Nor give my child my own name, cultures are different so I feel like here if you do that it just makes you look like a narcissist.

4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional?
Totally not. And we have a lot of traditions in the family. I am going to be building my life in the way of bringing in more folklore tradition. But some tradition is also ass, like if it's holding back progression. I have many Laestadian relatives. I'm sure they think they are very traditional, holding onto the "true traditions" or whatever. And to me, Christianity is not traditional at all so I'd say their "true traditions" are fake traditions actually. There are many ways to look at this! When does your "traditional" start? For many people, it's like the 1950s. For someone else, it's Christianity because "it's been here for 800 years!". And I'd say: "Only 800? First of all, it's only like 500-600 years at most to my ancestors, plus in the terms of time, that's like nothing! There are older traditions"

5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them?
I do not plan to have children. If I ever have any nieces or nephews though, I'd like to sing traditional myths to them.

About a month ago, I took in two girl cats, ages 6 and 9, to foster. I have now been given the ok that I can adopt them.

6-year-old is Noki (Finnish for "soot"), a black cat obviously. She is slender and shy, and in the beginning, she spent most of her time in my closet. However, she is crazy about pets and will come to push her head on your hands, legs, anywhere, more more more pets. She had not been spayed so I had to take her to the vet. She hated it and hated the cone to prevent her from licking the wound. I broke the rules by taking the cone off early, but she was very scared and stressed out over it and even peed on my bed... After this, she has become braver and more social. A true sweetheart!

9-year-old is Näpsä (Finnish for "nifty"), a grey cat. She is a fat ball and much more social, already coming to get to know me on her second day at my place. She meows a lot and demands what she wants, like if she wants to be let on the balcony, she will let you know. A few days ago, weird things started happening as someone was puking water and peeing on the couch. Yesterday, I realized it was Näpsä, and she seemed to have problem with peeing. I took her to the vet urgent care immediately in case it was a life threatening case of blockage in the urinary tract. Fortunately that was not the case, and she had an ordinary case of urinary tract infection. Her peeing problems were caused by her feeling pain. She has now been prescribed with pain meds.

It was Wanderer's birthday on the 3rd and Sethos appeared in Wanderer's bday art, asking to give him a traditional desert hairstyle. Some people who ship Wanderer with Kazuha or Childe have NOT taken this well.

I've seen edits of both replacing Sethos in that image with Kazuha or Childe. It confuses me so much.

I ask in my head, why. Why would you make such an edit. Why would Kazuha give Wanderer a traditional desert hairstyle? Why would Childe give Wanderer a traditional desert hairstyle?

It kind of breaks my brain, there is nothing wrong with making edits of course and it hurts no one, I'm just confused as to why would you make that edit when it makes zero sense.

I don't think they even know that that is not just some random hairstyle but specific to Sethos's culture. Which is just ignorant about the lore more than anything else.

I just wanted to express how brainless those edits seem to me from the lore perspective. But I don't want to attack people so I just express this here on my blog.
