On the Eurovision shituation
I'm only writing this because I have seen the spreading of misinfo on this a lot.
A lot of people have been demanding for Israel to be kicked out of Eurovision due to its actions in Palestine, and the fact that Russia "was kicked".
This is incorrect.
Nothing wrong with demanding Israel out. I mean that Russia was not kicked out due to its war.
For starters, I will erase the argument of "Israel is not even in Europe" as Eurovision is for EBU member countries, not European countries. Some non-European EBU partners like Australia are also there. This argument is meaningless.
Eurovision was started after WWII to create some unity in Europe. Socialist countries did not participate, of course, as they had their own Intervision Song Contest. And then there were countries like Finland that played in both teams, though that's besides the point. Eurovision really likes to think of itself as something that unites people regardless of any conflicts or wars. This is why their main stance is not kicking out anyone. They have also allowed multiple dictatorships, such as Belarus, to participate. They do not care about the morality of the state.
This is also why they allowed Russia to participate when they started their war in Ukraine in 2014. Yes, 2014, that is when this war actually started. It caused some drama with Russia in Eurovision, such as Russian artists being booed. Ukraine also scored some victories to boost its image in Western Europe. And one year, Russia picked an artist who was banned in Ukraine, on purpose, when Ukraine was hosting the competition, just to be petty assholes of course.
Another eye-brow raising instance is the inclusion Azerbaijan, who has done horrible actions against Armenians and Armenian minority within its borders. The two countries have an active border conflict in Mountain Karabakh region. And then there is Israel of course, this conflict in Palestine is also long running by this point. But Israel has been involved for long.
Oh, and Russia was allowed to go on business as usual in Eurovision when they attacked Georgia in 2007. Meanwhile, Eurovision forbid Georgia from participating with the disco song "We Don't Wanna Put In". (That's a Putin pun if you don't see.)
So why is Russia no longer participating? And Belarus? Because they decided not to on their own. There was big pressure on Eurovision to ban Russia, of course, but ultimately it was Russia who left the EBU and with that, Eurovision. Russia had for many years already had complaints about Eurovision's "gay agenda", and they had done things like put advertisements over drag queen Conchita Wurst's performance. So leaving, I imagine, was an easy decision for them. Belarus was forbidden to enter in 2022 when they tried twice to participate with propaganda songs, and they haven't come back since then.
What I am trying to say is, while protesting against Israel in Eurovision is okay, you shouldn't argue like, "well they kicked out Russia" when it was Russia itself that left with big dramatics. Let alone argue some heinous shit that puts Ukrainians and Palestinians into a victim competition.
Ultimately, though, it boils down to money. Eurovision's biggest sponsor is the Israeli owned company MoroccanOil. You can put two and two together on your own.
